A single regional structure representing Central Asia and the Caucasus as a whole has not yet been formed, Chairman of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute Frederick Starr said at the Central Asia-Mongolia-Caucasus-Afghanistan (CAMCA) Regional Forum in Baku, APA reports.

Starr said the countries of the region have various formats of cooperation with external partners.

“Yes, there are various useful formats organizing cooperation with the region from outside. One of the first such formats was established more than 20 years ago between Japan and Central Asia. Later, Korea, Europe, Russia and China also created their own formats of interaction. This is good, but by its nature it is centrifugal,” Starr said.

According to him, at the same time, ties between the two shores of the Caspian Sea have expanded over the past decade in a number of areas, including transport, trade, tariffs, taxation and tourism.

Starr noted that these processes create significant prospects for the further development of intra-regional cooperation.
