France is already trying to realize its colonial policy in terms of legislation, Chair of the New Caledonian Congress Committee on Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Sustainable Development, Energy, Transport and Communications Naisseline Omayra said at a press conference held in Milli Majlis (Parliament), APA reports.

She stated that the official Paris aims to influence the decisions of thousands of people: "New Caledonia has signed various agreements with France from time to time. France was supposed to support the independence of the people of New Caledonia through them. However today, by making changes in the constitution, France is trying to limit the rights of ethnic minorities. Today, France is distancing itself from neutrality by failing to adhere to its obligations. France is trying to prevent the holding of a third referendum regarding the self-determination of the people of New Caledonia. A referendum was held during the COVID-19 pandemic as well. Movements that support independence, like us, started to show their support for us. The third review of the referendum was not fair at all. Even though this was extremely important for us. 85% of the population participated in the referendum held in 2020, but this figure dropped to 43% in 2023. Although the elections were supposed to be held in the provinces this year, this process was postponed. The French government also wanted to prevent 30,000 people who did not belong to the local Kanat people from participating in the referendum. We believe that the world community should recognize the self-determination rights of all people. We continue our struggle for independence."
