Former special representative: We must fix the UN system

The UN Security Council operates in a different format, said former Special Envoy of the Chinese Government for European Affairs, Wu Hongbo, during the panel discussion on "Geopolitical Changes: Responsible Partnership versus Rivalry" held within the framework of the 12th Global Baku Forum, APA reports.

He noted that some countries misuse the veto power of the Security Council in certain situations: “We must initiate constructive dialogue and turn our promises into actions. What is said does not always match what is done. For instance, Security Council resolutions have absolute power. However, some countries apply these resolutions selectively, while the five permanent members of the Council approach them with double standards. We must fix the UN system and restore historical justice, especially toward African and developing countries. This must be done at the UN level.”

Wu Hongbo also touched upon relations between the United States and China.

“China believes that both China and the United States can be friends,” he added.
