"Against the background of increasing conflicts in the world, countries direct most of their spending to defense," said Yves Leterme, the Former Prime Minister of Belgium (2008, 2009-2011) in a panel discussion at the 11th Baku Global Forum, APA reports

"The Belgian government is aware that more needs to be done on climate change and is contributing to global efforts," he said.

The former Prime Minister said that wars and conflicts have a bad effect on climate change policy: "Due to defense costs, the volume of funds directed to the fight against climate change is decreasing further. Wars are a serious problem in the fight against climate change, because it affects both the costs and the climate directly."

He added that it is very important to educate and raise awareness in the society about climate change and the seriousness of this issue, and as a result, it affects people's behavior and approach to the environment.
