“Azerbaijan deserves congratulations for presenting an island of civilization and security in such a period," said former President of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga at a press conference dedicated to the 13th Global Baku Forum, APA reports.

According to her, serious conflicts are continuing in the world that threaten not only peace but also the stability and economic balance of the entire world.

“These are very difficult times that create a feeling of helplessness.

In such a period, Azerbaijan should be congratulated for presenting an island of civilization and security, especially after being able to resolve the problem with its neighbor Armenia, which had long been known as a ‘frozen conflict’.”

Everything in the region seemed very promising. It appeared that it would be possible to leave behind old conflicts, old hatreds, misunderstandings, differing views and interests, overcome them, and build on our common ground, relying on issues we can agree on and working for the well-being of the majority, not just a few, but many.

However, in 2026, events are not going well. Feelings of hatred have flared up again and resurfaced.

In this very difficult and tense period, I have high expectations from this forum. I hope that the ideas voiced here will give hope to ordinary people in different parts of the world who are concerned about their future and the future of our planet, and will show which paths we can take to make the situation better, not worse.
