“The impacts of climate change are already clearly visible, and this has become an undeniable reality. We can clearly observe its effects in our region as well,” Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said during his speech at the opening ceremony of the Fourth Climate Week (CW4) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan and organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, APA reports.
According to him, the decline in the Caspian Sea level is one example of this.
“Climate change has a serious impact on economies and states. This reality makes economic diversification and ensuring energy resilience even more relevant,” Jeyhun Bayramov said.
He emphasized that Azerbaijan is determined to continue the achievements it has made on the climate agenda.
“We are expanding our use of renewable energy sources. We are implementing our wind and solar energy projects within the framework of international cooperation,” the minister noted.
Jeyhun Bayramov recalled that during COP29 in Baku, historic decisions were adopted on climate finance, carbon markets and other areas of the Paris Agreement: “These decisions serve to accelerate climate action and provide support to countries that want to fulfill their commitments but do not have sufficient resources to do so."
According to the Foreign Minister, the Baku Finance Goal, as a commitment underpinning trust among the Parties, should be properly fulfilled and delivered: “Its ambition should exceed $300 billion. As the Baku–Belém Roadmap also demonstrates, it is possible to mobilize more than $1 trillion in climate finance."
Jeyhun Bayramov stated that Azerbaijan’s leadership demonstrated internationally in this context is complemented by decisive steps taken domestically" “We are increasing our renewable energy capacity by commissioning major solar and wind projects, expanding hydropower and implementing clean energy projects with international partners. By 2030, agreements already signed envisage the creation of approximately 6 gigawatts of additional solar and wind energy capacity. With the implementation of these plans, Azerbaijan is poised to exceed the ambition of the first global agreement to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030. We are determined to demonstrate that traditional energy producers can become pioneers of a green and sustainable future."
The minister noted that all these areas are based on the long-term strategic vision of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
