Europeans must be confident and speak from common front - Former European Council President

"I have worked in the European Union for 10 years, and today I am considered a veteran of that field," said the former President of the European Council, Charles Michel, during the panel themed Geopolitical Shifts: Responsible Partnerships versus Rivalry at the XII Global Forum, APA reports.

He mentioned that they periodically brought EU governments together: "We were raising the issue of the EU's autonomy and independence. Of course, we were also working on security issues."

Charles Michel added that five years ago, calls were already being made for the adoption of independent decisions, and now this is being presented as a requirement: "Europeans must approach themselves with confidence like never before. We must emerge from a unified front. We must trust each other; we are strong when we unite. We have no choice of backing down from our interests. There should be no room for any retreat, no room for deviation from support. We are Europe and we must be united as Europe. If we want to strengthen faith in international law, we must be united. If we do not, we will only act piecemeal, and we will face even worse consequences after the events in Ukraine."
