EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos observed the mine-clearance process in Azerbaijan's Aghdam, APA’s local bureau reports.
Marta Kos visited the district’s liberated Sarijali village today as part of her trip to Aghdam. The visitors inspected mined areas and observed demining operations carried out by the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).
The EU Commissioner was informed that during the period of occupation, Armenia had planted a large number of mines in Azerbaijani territories. It was noted that after the areas were liberated, mine-clearance operations began and a significant amount of land has since been cleared of mines and unexploded ordnance.
Officials also told her that since the Second Karabakh War, hundreds of people have fallen victim to mines planted by Armenian forces during the occupation.
Later, Marta Kos watched the controlled detonation and neutralization of the mines.
