Peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia is drawing closer, Dennis Sammut, Director of LINKS Europe, said during a roundtable discussion in Baku titled “Europe-Azerbaijan Relations: Assessing Historical Experience and Directions for Future Cooperation,” APA reports.
According to him, this marks a new era for the South Caucasus as a whole, as well as for Europe.
Sammut recalled that the peace agreement has been initialed but has not yet been signed.
The director emphasized that in the mid-1990s, Azerbaijan was suffering from the consequences of the war, whereas the situation is now completely different.
He also criticized the European Union’s past policy toward Azerbaijan: “The EU has made many mistakes in its relations with Azerbaijan. The EU Delegation opened in Azerbaijan in 2008. However, by that time, nearly twenty years had passed since Azerbaijan restored its independence.”
