Commission chairman: EU missions in Armenia poses threat to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity

“The Missions of European Union in Armenia poses a threat to Azerbaijan,” Ramid Namazov, the chairman of the Temporary Commission against Foreign Interference and Hybrid Threats, said during a public discussion held in the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament), on the topic “A hybrid attack under the guise of a ‘peace mission’ in the South Caucasus,” APA reports.

He stated that there are two conditions that constitute the legal basis for the establishment of a European Union mission in a particular country - an invitation from a partner country or a UN Security Council resolution:

"As for the mission in Armenia, we are witnessing a completely different picture. To date, the European Union has established three missions in Armenia under the names of EUMCAP, EUPAT and EUMA. Although the first of these was established on partially legal grounds, the other two can be assessed as missions that pose a threat to the territorial integrity, inviolability of borders and sovereignty of our country without the consent of Azerbaijan. The first two missions have completed their activities, and the first term of office of EUMA expired on February 19, 2025.

On January 10, 2025, EU foreign policy spokeswoman Anitta Hipper told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Armenian service that the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas had proposed extending the tenure of the Mission for another two years, and that this had been supported by member states. On January 30, a decision was made to extend the term of EUMA until February 19, 2027."
