Colombia's President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has announced that at least 15 embassies in various countries, including the Colombian Embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan, will be closed as part of efforts to reduce government spending, APA reports, citing Colombian media.
De la Espriella said in a televised address that the process of closing the embassies will begin after he officially assumes office.
The diplomatic missions slated for closure are located in Algeria, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Hungary, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Romania, Senegal, and South Africa.
The president-elect also said his administration would halt the process of opening a Colombian embassy in Palestine.
Note that Abelardo de la Espriella won the presidential election held in June. He is expected to be officially sworn in and assume office on August 7.
