Baku Initiative Group has prepared a report on New Caledonia, Baku Initiative Group told APA.

According to information, the BIG, together with its foreign researchers, has prepared a new study on New Caledonia. The study, titled "New Caledonia: Colonial Heritage, the Struggle for Self-Determination and the Crisis of 2024," examines the May 2024 riots in New Caledonia, their causes, the course of the processes, as well as the repressions against the Kanak people and the results of the international response and struggle in this regard.

It was noted that the study, written between March and June 2025, covers the chronology of events, the scale of violence and destruction, the atrocities committed by French law enforcement entities, as well as the response of the region and countries with interests in the region, as well as the UN: "The study shows that colonial rule is at the root of the Kanak people's protests, and analyzes serious shortcomings in the fundamental rights of peoples living under slavery.

Several key conclusions emerge from this study, reflecting both local specificity and the broader political context. Thus, the 2024 crisis in New Caledonia showed that France's attempts to maintain control over the territory through force and administrative methods - without respecting the right of the indigenous people to self-determination - are exacerbating the conflict. Also, the response of the metropolis in the form of repression, a state of emergency and arrests showed that it was not ready for dialogue and that colonial reflexes were still strong. The study analyzes from the perspective of international law that the issue of the status of Caledonia is not an internal affair of France and concludes that lasting peace is impossible without a fair settlement.

The agreement signed between France and New Caledonia on July 12 proves that the results of the aforementioned study were accurately predicted: the decision on the status of the island should be made by the Kanak people and that New Caledonia should gradually become fully independent."
