Baku Initiative Group holds int'l conference at UN Geneva Office

On October 22, 2024, an international conference called "The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Consequences of French Colonialism" was held by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) within the framework of the 142nd session of the Human Rights Committee (HRC) at the UN Geneva Office, APA reports.

Parliamentarians from French and Dutch colonies - New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Corsica, Mayotte, Bonaire, Saint-Martin,Guyana, heads of NGOs and political parties, experts, lawyers, scientists, researchers, as well as, diplomats from Switzerland, Russia and Kazakhstan participated.

At the same time, Kemi Seba, a famous political activist and the president of the "Urgencies Panafricanist" organization, attended the event.

The participants of the conference gave detailed information about the current situation in the territories that were the result of French and Dutch colonialism, as well as the gross violations of human rights, and highly appreciated the activities of the BIG in the direction of bringing the voice of the peoples drowned under colonial violence to the international community.

Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of BIG, stated that despite various pressures from France, the organization he leads will continue to be the voice of the enslaved peoples and that BIG aims to further expand as a prestigious international platform. He demanded that the French side stop persecuting pro-independence supporters for their cooperation with the BIG.

Famous Pan-Africanist Kemi Seba gave a detailed account of her illegal detention and torture by French security forces last week for 72 hours.

The participants of the conference called on the UN and other international organizations to take practical and effective steps towards the elimination of colonialism.

At the end of the event, the participants wore T-shirts with the inscription "End French colonialism!" and raised placards condemning French colonial policy.
