Azerbaijanis fighting on both sides of the trenches in the war in Ukraine should be stripped of their citizenship, just like those who fought in Syria and Iraq, Chairman of the Human Rights Committee Zahid Oruj said at today’s meeting of the Milli Majlis during the discussion of the “Annual Report of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan on the protection of human rights for 2023,” APA reports.

The Chairman of the Committee noted that the report reflects the issue of repatriation to Azerbaijan of 469 women and children who remain in the combat zone in Syria: “The world has ambivalent attitudes towards those who joined terrorist groups and their relatives. The return of members of illegal armed groups in the Middle East and their relatives to their countries is considered a threat. According to official information from the State Security Service, more than 1,000 of our citizens have left for Syria. The same situation arose in the Russian-Ukrainian war. We regret that among those who shoot on both sides of the trench, there are Azerbaijanis. We consider the participation of Azerbaijani citizens in regular armies and military operations as part of rebel military formations to be the same crime. Therefore, those who fight on both sides of the trenches in the war in Ukraine should be deprived of Azerbaijani citizenship, just like the group of Azerbaijanis who fought in Syria and Iraq. The traumas deeply embedded in the psychology of these people and their children make their integration and rehabilitation difficult. Therefore, the legislative system needs to be tightened.”
