Azerbaijani Parliament discussed compensation for Western Azerbaijanis

The issue of compensation for Western Azerbaijanis has been raised at the first meeting of the spring session of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament), APA reports.

MP Hikmet Babaoglu said that Armenia allegedly paid compensation to Western Azerbaijanis: "This statement by the Armenian Foreign Minister is a distortion of both the truth and the figures. First, as Ararat Mirzoyan said, not 170 thousand, but 300 thousand Azerbaijanis were subjected to the policy of ethnic cleansing. Second, the compensation provided is not compensation for Azerbaijanis' houses. Because on December 7, 1988, an earthquake occurred in the city of Spitak. In 1988, there was no independent Republic of Armenia. At that time, Azerbaijanis living in the area where the earthquake occurred were given certain compensation from the USSR budget for the repair of their houses. But after the compensation was spent, after the houses were repaired, those houses were appropriated by Armenians and the property rights of Azerbaijanis were trampled on."
