The joint declaration signed on the results of the Washington meeting opens a new page in the history of the South Caucasus, Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) MP Soltan Mammadov told APA.

Soltan Mammadov said that the visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to the USA is of historic importance: “The joint declaration signed on the results of the meeting held in Washington city between the leaders of Azerbaijan, the USA, and Armenia opens a new page in the history of the South Caucasus. The successful results of the visit can be evaluated based on two important parameters. The first important result is the achievement of peace that Armenia had long tried to avoid with various excuses. After the Patriotic War, Azerbaijan proposed a peace agenda and identified five related principles. Armenia tried to delay the process as much as possible. However, it was the wise policy, flexible, and pragmatic diplomacy of the President of Azerbaijan that became the main factor determining the outcome. Armenia was forced to agree to the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, the opening of the corridor connecting the main part of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan, and the removal of the clause related to territorial claims from its constitution. From a geopolitical aspect, this is a historic achievement that changes the fate of the entire region, opening a reliable window for peace, cooperation, and prosperity."

Soltan Mammadov noted that another important issue determining the success of the visit is the foundation of a new era in Azerbaijan-US relations: “As a result of miscalculations by the Biden administration, relations between the two countries had seriously weakened. As the President also noted, the current leadership of the US better appreciates Azerbaijan’s geopolitical role. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the United States of America on the establishment of a Strategic Working Group for the preparation of the Strategic Partnership Charter is an extremely important step towards bringing relations to a new level. This indicates the restoration of mutual trust and the intention to deepen cooperation. The Charter is expected to cover areas including regional connectivity such as energy, trade, and transit; economic investment including artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure; as well as defense, security, and counterterrorism. Such a wide-ranging partnership with a strong country like the US will further strengthen Azerbaijan’s position in the international relations system. At the same time, naturally, it will also somewhat increase the US’s influence on regional processes and its global prestige."

The MP stated that one of the main outcomes of the visit is the abolition of Amendment 907 to the “Freedom Support Act.” The complete suspension of the implementation of this biased document, which has a 33-year history, should be regarded as another political victory of the President of Azerbaijan: “The results of the President’s visit to Washington give every reason to confidently say that several strategic tasks facing our state have been resolved. This once again confirms the strong leadership of the President of Azerbaijan and the international prestige of our state. We are stepping into a new historic phase.”
