“The Inter-Parliamentary Union is interested in further developing cooperation with Azerbaijan,” said Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong as he met with Azerbaijan`s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov, APA reports.

The parties discussed prospects for enhancing the existing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as well as the current regional situation.

Bayramov highlighted the substantial mandate of the IPU in contributing to networking, sharing of ideas and establishing contacts among parliaments globally. He emphasized Azerbaijan`s active engagement in the Union`s activities.

The Azerbaijani minister pointed out the broad prospects of cooperation between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, established during Azerbaijan`s presidency of the NAM, adding that the 148th Assembly of the IPU, scheduled to take place in Geneva this March, would provide fruitful discussions on cooperation possibilities.

Underlining the importance of Azerbaijan’s hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) this year, Jeyhun Bayramov shed light on the preparatory work done in this regard and hoped the IPU would be closely represented at the event.

FM Bayramov provided insight into the current situation in the region during the post-conflict period, ongoing restoration and reconstruction works in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan, as well as peace initiatives. He mentioned that following the local anti-terrorist measures carried out in the Karabakh region last year, UN representatives and other international organizations visited the region for the first time in 30 years.

FM Bayramov drew attention to the fact that certain international organizations, which demonstrated inactivity during the occupation and conflict, are now undermining the current normalization agenda. Bayramov described the latest step taken against Azerbaijan by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) as another demonstration of such double standards.

Hailing his visit to Azerbaijan, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong emphasized his belief that Azerbaijan would successfully chair the forthcoming COP29 event this year. The Secretary General noted that establishing close contacts with previous chairmanships regarding the organization of the event demonstrates a systematic approach to the work done by Azerbaijan.

During the conversation, the two also had a broad exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
