Azerbaijani FM briefed his Iraqi counterpart on peace process with Armenia -UPDATED1

On May 7, 2025, during an official visit to the Republic of Iraq, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ceyhun Bayramov met with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan told APA.

The one-on-one meeting between the ministers was followed by an expanded meeting involving delegations from both countries.

During the expanded meeting, Azerbaijan and Iraq reviewed a wide range of bilateral and regional cooperation issues, with a focus on prospects in economy, trade, energy, transport, communications, science, culture, education, and tourism, as well as developments in the regional and global context.

The sides emphasized the historical friendship and brotherly ties between the two countries, highlighting the cultural and traditional closeness of their peoples as a strong foundation for advancing relations. They also underscored the importance of high-level visits and the political consultation mechanism in further enhancing cooperation.

During the meeting, Minister Ceyhun Bayramov emphasized the importance of existing cooperation mechanisms between Azerbaijan and Iraq, particularly the Intergovernmental Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation and the Azerbaijan–Iraq Business Council. He stressed the need to tap into the potential for enhanced economic cooperation, especially in the fields of energy and mutual investment.

The sides also discussed collaboration within regional and international organizations such as the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), underlining the importance of sustained support in multilateral platforms.

In the humanitarian and education spheres, the sides discussed scholarship programs for students from OIC and NAM member states, such as the Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant. They also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between ADA University and Iraq’s Diplomatic Service Institute as a key step toward strengthening academic ties.

During the meeting, discussions covered regional and international security matters, the current situation in the Middle East, the India-Pakistan tension, as well as the post-conflict realities in the region, Azerbaijan's efforts in reconstruction, demining, and peacebuilding. The ministers also exchanged views on other current issues of mutual interest.

Following the meeting, the ministers held a press conference with media representatives, where they issued statements summarizing the outcomes of the discussions.
