Azerbaijani Ambassador goes to Afghanistan, presents official letter regarding opening of embassy

Azerbaijan's newly appointed Ambassador to Afghanistan Ilham Mammadov has gone to Kabul and met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Taliban Amir Khan Muttaqi, the representative of Taliban MFA Abdul Qahar Balkhi noted on X, APA reports.

During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Amir Khan Muttaqi, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Kabul Ilham Mammadov presented an official letter regarding the opening of an embassy in Kabul. 

Note that for the first time in the history of modern Azerbaijan, an Ambassador will work in Afghanistan.

On January 13 2021, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed the Law on establishing an embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Afghanistan, and in July 2021, appointed Ilham Mammadov as an Ambassador to Afghanistan.

In December 2023, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov noted that Baku is planning to open an embassy in Kabul in 2024.

The decision to open an embassy of Azerbaijan in Kabul was made 27 years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1994.

Recall that following the United States’ announcement of withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban movement restored its control of the country. On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul without a fight and on September 7, announced the composition of the interim government.
