Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko today within the framework of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Istanbul, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova emphasized the importance of international platforms such as the IPU and the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis noted that there is broad potential for further development of relations between the two countries and spoke about the role of interparliamentary ties. She stated that today very effective cooperation has been established between the legislative bodies of the two countries, and that their parliamentarians actively participate both in bilateral events and demonstrate positive interaction within international organizations.
During the meeting, cultural and humanitarian ties between the two peoples were also discussed, and the importance of further developing mutual relations was emphasized.
The sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova has met with Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko, the Federation Council of Russia said, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.
According to the information, the meeting took place in Istanbul on the sidelines of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
It was stated that the Chairperson of the upper house of the Russian parliament noted that Russia-Azerbaijan relations have great potential for development: “We are committed to strengthening ties with Azerbaijan.”
Valentina Matviyenko emphasized the importance of the recent completion of the procedure related to the consequences of the AZAL plane crash and expressed condolences to the Azerbaijani side.
Matviyenko announced the beginning of a new stage in relations with Azerbaijan. According to her, the final agreement between Russia and Azerbaijan on the consequences of the AZAL plane crash opens new opportunities for further development of Russia-Azerbaijan relations.
“We are very pleased that yesterday our governments made a final decision on eliminating the consequences of the tragic plane crash. We have completed this stage, and this opens new opportunities for the further development of mutually beneficial Russia-Azerbaijan relations,” Interfax quoted her as saying.
The interlocutors noted the regular nature of contacts between Russian and Azerbaijani parliamentarians. It was reported that a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Federal Assembly and the Milli Majlis was held in Moscow at the end of last year, and the next meeting will be held in Baku: “We expect a proposal from the Azerbaijani side regarding the date and venue of the 13th Russia-Azerbaijan Interregional Forum. Currently, more than seventy subjects of the Russian Federation have relations with Azerbaijan.”
Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova conveyed the greetings of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and once again reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.
During the conversation, the situation around Iran was discussed. The Chairperson of the Federation Council recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to the Azerbaijani leader for assistance in the evacuation of Russian citizens from Iran, as well as for facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid from Russia to the people of Iran through Azerbaijan.
Valentina Matviyenko and Sahiba Gafarova noted that bilateral cooperation within international parliamentary forums, including the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of CIS Member States and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, is traditionally at a high level. They also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
