When Azerbaijan applied to host the COP, there was serious competition. Türkiye is also a very strong candidate country. Several points prove this. Türkiye has a large and active delegation on climate issues, and the region where Türkiye is located is significantly affected by climate change, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Lead Negotiator of COP29, Yalchin Rafiev, told journalists during the conference titled “Diplomacy, Action, and the Climate Path Linking COP29 and COP30” held in Istanbul, APA’s Istanbul correspondent reports.
He noted that politically, Türkiye's fact of never having hosted a COP so far, and its absence from the list of developed and developing countries according to the Paris Agreement, is a great advantage: “Everyone expects the COP host to be neutral, not to support any position, and not to serve anyone’s interests. We are ready to share our experience with Türkiye on this matter.”
