Azerbaijan elected to UNESCO committee on cultural expression diversity

The Republic of Azerbaijan has been elected as a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions for the 2025–2029 term, APA reports citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The elections took place on June 20, 2025, at UNESCO headquarters within the framework of the 10th Conference of the Parties to the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The Intergovernmental Committee, the main executive body overseeing the implementation of the 2005 Convention, has 24 members, and the term of office of members is 4 years. Azerbaijan was previously represented on the Intergovernmental Committee between 2019-2023.

The main functions of the Intergovernmental Committee, which convenes annually, include promoting the objectives of the Convention, monitoring its implementation, analyzing and presenting periodic reports of Parties to the Conference, preparing operational guidelines, making relevant recommendations on issues raised by countries, and establishing consultation mechanisms to promote the principles of the Convention in other international forums.

Azerbaijan’s re-election to the Committee reflects the country’s consistent and purposeful policy in safeguarding cultural diversity, promoting freedom of cultural expression, and strengthening international cooperation in this field, as well as the high importance it attaches to these areas.
