Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan - Head of the Department of Foreign Policy Affairs of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan Hikmat Hajiyev, responded to critics of Azerbaijan's hosting of COP29 as an oil country, APA reports.
Hikmat Hajiyev told journalists that 29 COP sessions had been held so far.
"Except for Switzerland, almost all countries have been producers of fossil fuels in one form or another. Regarding fossil fuels in general, if there is a supply on the one hand, there is also a demand on the other. Almost all parties to the Convention are consumers of fossil fuels. Here, we are seeing some cheap, somewhat populist elements. Fossil fuels are part of the existing world. The real world has its demands. Of course, it is a fact that they have a negative impact on climate change. To prevent this, we must work together, rather than engaging in these kinds of shallow and meaningless discussions. Before us, European countries have hosted this conference. For example, take Poland. Poland is one of the largest coal producers in the world today, and so on," he said.
