“Azerbaijan is doing great things to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development,” said Ivana Živković, Assistant Secretary-General of United Nations, Assistant Administrator and Director, Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) during her speech at 3rd international humanitarian demining conference held in Zangilan, APA reports.

The UN official saying that mines pollute lands, she said that the main goal is to restore the areas contaminated by those mines for human exploitation again.

“The construction of smart villages and settlements is an example of this. Close involvement of the communities of the mine-damaged areas in these activities, as well as to increasing awareness in the direction of creating a safe environment is important. We can reach our goals quickly by mobilizing our knowledge," she said.

Ivana Živković emphasized the importance of integrating demining activities with environmental restoration and national development programs. She said that the mission of reducing the impact of landmines on the environment is not only for elimination of the problem of explosive ordnance, but also for ensuring safe life, agriculture and biodiversity for future generations. The main goal is to transform damaged lands into thriving ecosystems and sustainable communities.
