U.S. Embassy announces Spring 2007 Democracy Commission small grants program

The U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan has announced the opening of the Spring 2007 Round of the Democracy Commission Small Grants Program, the Embassy told the APA. The application period begins on April 18, 2007 and ends on May 16, 2007 at 6 PM. Interested Azerbaijani non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are invited to submit a grant proposal in one of the following fourteen topic areas:

Promoting Political Process Reforms:
â€¢ Projects supporting free and fair Presidential Elections in November 2008.
â€¢ Projects promoting the role and responsibilities of municipalities.
â€¢ Projects supporting Azerbaijanâ€™s engagement with multilateral organizations (NATO, GUAM, OSCE).
Protecting Human Rights:
â€¢ Projects supporting the Governmentâ€™s implementation of the National Action Plan on the Protection of Human Rights.
Expanding Media Freedom:
â€¢ Projects promoting and expanding participatory journalism.
Advancing the Rule of Law:
â€¢ Projects monitoring court cases.
Creating an Educated, Empowered and Engaged Citizenry:
â€¢ Projects raising public awareness about domestic violence against women.
â€¢ Projects raising public awareness about trafficking in persons.
â€¢ Projects promoting peace building and conflict transformation skills.
â€¢ Projects encouraging university students to publish an online course-guide.
â€¢ Projects cooperating with schools on developing extra-curricular activities that teach children civic responsibility.
â€¢ A project designing and launching a â€œone-stop shopâ€ website detailing recently published Azerbaijani language information on human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
Economic Reforms:
â€¢ Projects creating awareness in society and the business community on the importance of Azerbaijanâ€™s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
â€¢ Projects strengthening the work of professional associations
