The Azerbaijan national team lost 0–5 to Iceland in their first match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, APA reports.
After the match AFFA Secretary General Jahanhir Farajullayev gave a statement to journalists: “There is much to be said. This team and these players did not deserve such management and such a result. We respect the Icelandic team greatly. But if we cannot play against them and accept a purely defensive style from the outset, then that is our problem. It is not the players’ fault. The system was flawed from the very beginning. The head coach did not do his homework. His approach to Azerbaijani football, its players, and the people is unacceptable. No one has the right to make the Azerbaijani people go through this.”
