Francis Halzen is a renowned particle and neutrino physicist who was born in Belgium in 1944. He has been a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison since 1972. Halzen is the principal investigator of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory project, located in Antarctica and regarded as the world’s largest neutrino detector.
Under his leadership, IceCube succeeded in detecting high-energy astrophysical neutrinos originating from sources outside the galaxy in 2013. For his contributions to astroparticle physics, the scientist has received a number of prestigious awards, including the Balzan Prize, the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize and the American Physical Society’s 2026 Medal for Exceptional Achievement in Research.
