The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Hungary must comply with the ICC warrant for the arrest of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, despite Budapest voting to withdraw the country from the ICC, APA reports, citing DW.
"Budapest must comply with the Statute of the International Criminal Court if Russian President Vladimir Putin enters the country to meet with his American counterpart, Donald Trump. Although the Hungarian authorities announced their withdrawal from the court's jurisdiction, this decision will only take effect in April 2026," stated a representative of the German Foreign Ministry.
“Until then, Hungary is obliged to execute the arrest warrant issued by the ICC for Putin,” the German Foreign Ministry emphasized.
The ministry added that if it concerns exceptional cases such as negotiations between Russia and the US, the final decision should be made by the ICC itself, as such situations are not explicitly regulated in the statute.
At the same time, European Union officials stated that Putin's entry into Europe is not prohibited by sanctions.
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in turn, called the selection of Hungary as the meeting place for Trump and Putin "reasonable."
“God is sending us signals that we are on the right path,” he said, and ordered the establishment of an organizing committee to prepare for the Russia-US summit.
