The first trial in Germany over the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines is set to begin.

According to German media reports, Ukrainian citizen Sergey K. will appear before the Hamburg Higher Regional Court over the 2022 incident.

The court has scheduled 24 hearings through the end of January, with additional sessions planned for February. It has reportedly determined that sufficient evidence exists to examine the charges at trial.

Sergey K. faces allegations of a war crime, attacks on civilian facilities, causing an explosion, destroying structures and disrupting public infrastructure.

German federal prosecutors allege that Sergey K. and his associates planned the pipeline explosions on instructions from Ukrainian state bodies.

Investigators believe the suspects used forged documents to charter a sailing yacht from a German company and transport explosives to the area where the pipelines were located.

Sergey K. was detained in Italy in August 2025 and extradited to Germany. Another Ukrainian citizen was reportedly detained recently in Croatia.

On September 26, 2022, powerful explosions struck three lines of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines laid beneath the Baltic Sea.
