German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier starts his three-day official visit to Türkiye on Monday to mark the centennial of diplomatic relations between the two countries, APA reports citing Xinhua.

The German president met with Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu at the iconic international Sirkeci Train Station on the European side of the city.

Following the meeting, Steinmeier and Imamoglu visited an exhibition titled "Longing from Abroad," which depicted the migration of tens of thousands of Turkish workers to Germany from the Sirkeci Train Station in 1961 in search of better working and living conditions.

According to the state-run Anadolu news agency, Steinmeier would meet with the representatives of German companies operating in Türkiye in a boat tour on the Bosphorus Strait.

The German leader was scheduled to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the capital city of Ankara on Wednesday.
