Starting from the next academic year, the admission of foreign students to Georgia’s state universities will be suspended, said Georgia’s Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, APA’s local bureau reports.

He noted that private higher education institutions will continue to operate in the usual manner and will retain the ability to admit foreign students.

According to the minister, at present, the number of foreign students at some state universities accounts for approximately half of the total number of students.

“We must focus on providing quality education to Georgian citizens. Therefore, foreign nationals who pay several times more in tuition fees than Georgian citizens will not be admitted to state higher education institutions,” Mikanadze added.

It should be noted that 63 higher education institutions operate in Georgia, 19 of which are state universities.

In the 2024–2025 academic year, the number of foreign students studying at Georgian universities amounted to 37,125. This figure is 6,424 more compared to the previous academic year.

The number of Azerbaijani citizens receiving higher education in the neighboring country is 860. Of them, 376 are students of state universities, while 484 are students of private universities.
