Explosion kills 9 Turkish in Germany

The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon on the ground floor of the century-old building but rapidly spread, sending flames through the roof. The wooden staircase burned out, trapping all those inside and forcing many to jump out of the windows to escape the flames. Two young girls claim to have seen a German-speaking man setting fire to some kindling and placing it by a pram in the house stairwell. "The man set fire to some twigs and put it next to the pram," one of the girls, Aylin, told German television. Residents of a burning apartment building throw a baby to the fire brigade below in the southwest German city of Ludwigshafen on Sunday. The baby seen here survived the fall. Police said 24 people, all of them Turkish citizens, were registered as living in the four-storey building, but that more had been in the house because of carnival celebrations. In 2006 a Turkish cafe on the ground floor of the apartment building had been vandalized. . /APA/
