Italian president Giorgio Napolitano accepts PM Romano Prodi’s resignation
22 February 2007 09:10 (UTC +04:00)
President is to begin consultations on formation of new government. It is possible that Prodi will be asked to try to form a new government. The resignation of Romano Prodi is explained with the failure of votes in connection with government’s proposals on foreign policy in the Senate. Foreign Minister Massimo Dalema and PM Romano Prodi had some talks with radical pacifists before the vote. They failed to prove that if the country doesn’t implement commitments before the U.S.A. and refuses to participate in UN missions it would result with the isolation of the country. Some pacifists voted against the motion. Only 158 senators supported the motion while 160 was needed for approval. As life senators Julio Andreotti and Sergio Pinifarin abstained in the vote, it was considered as against. /APA/
