Geological exploration is planned to be expanded in Karabakh and East Zangezur, Azerbaijan's Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov said at a meeting chaired by President Ilham Aliyev dedicated to the State Program on the Development of the Mining (Metal Ores) and Metallurgical Industry in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2027–2030, APA reports.
The minister noted that the program is not limited to the period through 2030 but also identifies significant development opportunities for the subsequent phase:
"By that time, the possibilities for bringing copper, zinc, and lead reserves at the Filizchay polymetallic deposit into economic circulation will be assessed and finalized. The potential for utilizing approximately 470,000 tons of additional copper reserves at the Demirli deposit will be examined. A final assessment will be prepared regarding the potential of the Zaylik alunite deposits to form the raw material base for the aluminum value chain. In addition, based in part on the interest expressed by foreign investors, the possibility of establishing a new primary aluminum production facility with an annual capacity of approximately 200,000 tons is currently being explored. The expansion of geological exploration in Karabakh and East Zangezur is also envisaged."
