Increasing electricity imports from Azerbaijan to Iran for the winter season was discussed in Tehran, APA’s Tehran bureau reports.
Azerbaijani Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Sultanov and Mohammad Allahdad, CEO of Iran’s Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company, discussed energy exchanges, increasing direct electricity imports from Azerbaijan to Iran, the development and completion of joint hydroelectric power plants, as well as gas and electricity swaps during a meeting held in Tehran.
Elnur Sultanov touched upon joint hydroelectric power plant projects being implemented in border areas, including the Khudafarin and Ordubad projects, and said discussions were held on the construction and completion of these plants, as well as the opportunities that will arise after they are commissioned.
He noted that the completion of these plants will create new electricity generation capacity, and in the future it will be possible to supply and transmit part of the electricity generated at these plants to Iran.
The Azerbaijani Deputy Energy Minister said that opportunities for cooperation in the field of renewable energy between the private sectors of the two countries were also discussed.
According to him, the meeting discussed attracting strong and active Iranian investors to solar power plant projects being implemented in Azerbaijan, particularly in Nakhchivan.
Elnur Sultanov added that Iranian private-sector investors could participate in solar power plant construction projects in Azerbaijan within the framework of joint cooperation and the provision of technical and engineering services.
He expressed hope that by assessing the existing opportunities and creating conditions for the implementation of projects, this cooperation would contribute to the development of energy and investment ties between the two countries in the future.
During the meeting, the Deputy Minister invited Mohammad Allahdad to visit Azerbaijan to study the state of Azerbaijan’s electricity grid and develop joint cooperation.
The CEO of Iran’s Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company, referring to the history of cooperation between the two countries in the electricity sector, said that Iran and Azerbaijan, as friendly, brotherly and neighboring countries, have maintained good relations in the cultural, historical and technical fields for many years, and joint cooperation has also been established in the electricity sector.
Mohammad Allahdad said that the existing opportunities should be used more extensively than before to develop electricity ties between the two countries.
He said that, taking into account the talks held and the existing opportunities, he hopes that conditions will be created to increase energy imports from Azerbaijan to Iran during the upcoming winter.
According to Mohammad Allahdad, it was decided that expert groups from the two countries would conduct a specialized assessment of the existing opportunities at various interconnection points between the grids, as well as the technical and implementation conditions for electricity imports, in order to determine the scope and form of cooperation.
He also noted the history of cooperation in the electricity sector between Iran and Azerbaijan in various border areas, including Nakhchivan, and emphasized that developing and strengthening electricity interconnections and energy cooperation between the two countries could lay the groundwork for the expansion of bilateral relations in the coming years.
