The development of the Middle Corridor should not be limited to transit, Chairman of the Policy and Management Consulting Group (PMCG) Board and former Georgian Finance Minister Aleksi Aleksishvili said during the plenary session titled “Realizing CAMCA’s Development Potential: Political Foundations of Regional Cooperation” at the CAMCA 2026 Regional Forum held in Baku, APA reports.

He said that the development of the Middle Corridor should not be limited solely to geographical location and transit opportunities.

“The main issue is connectivity and economic cooperation, not the corridor itself. Physical infrastructure is very important, but it is not enough. One of the key issues is trade,” Aleksishvili said.

According to him, the Middle Corridor creates a historic opportunity for the countries of the region to develop new models of economic cooperation.

“Now we have a historic and unique opportunity to find a path for cooperation and shape economic growth models as part of regional cooperation,” he noted.

Aleksishvili emphasized that regional connectivity encompasses not only trade but also the movement of capital, labor and skills, as well as the development of institutional frameworks.

He also noted the importance of ensuring the efficient operation of infrastructure in the region and expanding opportunities for interaction between countries.

Aleksishvili also touched upon the financing of regional projects, saying that despite the development of the banking sector, there is a need to further develop the non-bank financial sector.
