The volume of transit cargo passing through Azerbaijan has approximately doubled over the past five years, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Hasanov said during a panel discussion held as part of the “German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026,” APA-Economics reports.
“We expect this figure to reach approximately 16 million tonnes by the end of this year. By 2030, we expect it to reach 30 million tonnes. I would particularly like to highlight container transportation. We are seeing very rapid growth in this area. Looking at the figures for the first nine months, the volume of container transportation at the Port of Baku increased by more than 30% compared with the same period last year,” he noted.
According to him, Azerbaijan’s capacity is also staying ahead of demand: “By improving operations alone, we have increased the port’s container handling capacity from 100,000 TEU to above 100,000 TEU. With the implementation of the second phase, this figure is expected to reach 500,000 TEU. In terms of land transport, the planned connection to Türkiye via Nakhchivan – the Zangezur Corridor – will open a new route in the south-western direction with a freight capacity of up to 15 million tonnes.
“The Caspian fleet is, of course, also an important part of this. Six additional small container ships are currently operating here. The Caspian fleet itself is also expanding. Baku Shipyard is currently building four container ships for ADY Ports and Kazakhstan Railways. Incidentally, these are Baku Shipyard’s first international orders.”
