Connectivity is, of course, not limited to sea and rail transport. The Middle Corridor also has an air transport dimension, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Hasanov said during a panel discussion held as part of the “German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026,” APA-Economics reports.
According to him, amid the closure or restriction of airspace along northern and southern routes due to ongoing conflicts, Azerbaijan continues to keep its airspace open and safe.
“The number of transit flights through Azerbaijan’s airspace has increased more than fivefold over four years, exceeding 260,000 flights per year. These include numerous flights between Europe and Asia, including flights from German airports.
“In terms of passenger transportation, there are 10 direct flights between Baku and Germany. AZAL operates flights to Berlin, while Lufthansa flies to Frankfurt every day. There is room for growth in this area, and we would also like to take advantage of this opportunity,” he said.
He added that connectivity is even stronger in terms of cargo transportation.
“Silk Way West Airlines, headquartered in Baku and one of Europe’s largest commercial cargo airlines, transports more than 500,000 tons of cargo annually. According to the latest data, more than 15% of air cargo transported between China and Germany is carried by Silk Way Airlines.
“A new cargo airport is currently being built in the Alat Free Economic Zone. The airport is located in the immediate vicinity of Baku Port and will create an additional annual cargo capacity of 1 million tons. Thus, cargo transportation by sea, rail, road and air will be concentrated in one location in the Alat zone,” he said.
