Azerbaijan is accelerating major infrastructure projects that will strengthen the resilience of the Middle Corridor and the transport ecosystem as a whole, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rahman Hummatov said during the session titled “Financing the Middle Corridor for Sustainable Transport and Trade,” organized within the framework of the Annual Meetings of the Islamic Development Bank held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
According to him, the Washington Declaration signed in 2025 with the participation of US President Donald Trump became an important milestone, was regarded as a significant step toward the creation of the Zangezur Corridor, and served to reinforce its role as an integral part of regional transport networks:
“In this regard, the project’s annual transit capacity is projected at 15 million tons. At the same time, Azerbaijan is implementing the second phase of the Baku Port expansion project. This will increase the port’s cargo handling capacity to 25 million tons annually and 500,000 TEU. In addition, a specialized aviation cluster is being established in the Alat Free Economic Zone, the national railway networks are being fully electrified and modernized, and new high-capacity highways and railway lines are being constructed.”
The deputy minister emphasized that these infrastructure initiatives have led to growing international and institutional interest along the Middle Corridor: “In this regard, we highly appreciate the role of the Islamic Development Bank Group and other multilateral development institutions in supporting sustainable connectivity and regional integration. Their expertise, financing instruments, and ability to mobilize private capital will be crucial in transforming strategic transport projects into bankable and commercially sustainable investments. I am confident that today’s discussions will contribute to identifying practical solutions, strengthening partnerships, and advancing the vision of a more connected and prosperous region.”
