British minister: We need to increase direct travel between Azerbaijan and UK

There is a need to increase the number of direct trips between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom in order to develop people-to-people ties between the two countries, UK Minister of State for Trade Lord Anas Sarwar said while speaking at the 8th meeting of the Azerbaijan-UK Joint Intergovernmental Commission held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

“If we want to succeed in people-to-people relations, we must ensure that there is more direct travel between the two countries. I have received this message very clearly. We need to increase the volume of tourism between our countries,” the minister said.

According to him, conditions should be created for more British companies to come to Azerbaijan and for Azerbaijani businesses to enter the UK market.

Lord Anas Sarwar also emphasized the importance of intensifying mutual high-level visits between the two countries and said there is an “open invitation” for Azerbaijani ministers to visit the United Kingdom.

The minister also named strengthening cooperation in education as one of the priority areas. According to him, expanding ties between educational institutions in Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom could contribute to the development of the economy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, healthcare, innovation and human capital.

He also said they are interested in increasing the participation of Azerbaijani companies in London’s capital market.

“I would like to see more Azerbaijani companies listed in London. This is one of the areas we discussed with your President this morning, and we look forward to further developing cooperation in this field,” Lord Anas Sarwar emphasized.

The British minister also identified agriculture and the food and beverage industry as promising areas for expanding trade relations.

Lord Anas Sarwar concluded by expressing satisfaction that an agreement on a strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom had been reached and said he looked forward to the document being signed by the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
