“The Baku–Aghdam–Baku railway line, which today carried its first passengers, will not only increase the accessibility of public transport in the Karabakh economic region, but also make a significant contribution to the socio-economic revival of Aghdam and surrounding districts, the expansion and accessibility of Azerbaijan’s transport capabilities in this region, and overall, to the Great Return,” said Nijat Guliyev, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC during the event held on the occasion of the launch of the Baku–Aghdam train, APA-Economics's correspondent dispatched to Aghdam reports.

"The restoration of railway infrastructure in the liberated territories is not limited to the Barda–Aghdam railway. As a continuation of this line, the construction of the Aghdam–Khankendi railway has already begun. On July 3 of this year, President Ilham Aliyev laid the foundation stone for the Khankendi Railway and Bus Terminal Complex. Like the building you see here, this complex will also be equipped with the most modern infrastructure, innovative technologies, and digital solutions, creating all advanced conditions for passenger transportation. By the end of 2026, the opening of both the Aghdam–Khankendi railway and the Khankendi Railway and Bus Terminal Complex is planned," said Nijat Guliyev.

According to him, along with Karabakh, railway infrastructure is also being restored in the East Zangezur economic region. 84% of the design work and 67% of the construction and installation work on the Horadiz–Agbend railway line has been completed.

“Currently, earthworks and the construction of engineering structures are underway between kilometers 75 and 106 of the line. Within the project framework, the construction of Yuxarı Mərcanlı, Şükürbəyli, Soltanlı, Qumlaq, Həkəri, Mincivan, Bartaz, and Ağbənd stations is planned. A total of 553 engineering structures, including bridges, road crossings, tunnels, galleries, and retaining walls, will be built along the railway line,” Nijat Guliyev emphasized.

According to him, in the Republic of Türkiye, the foundation for the Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway line, which will connect to the Zangezur corridor at the border with Nakhchivan, has been laid. In this regard, the restoration of Nakhchivan’s railway infrastructure has been declared a priority issue by the highest leadership of our country, and Azerbaijan Railways plans to start work in this direction as soon as possible.
