Euronews has prepared a report on the Middle Corridor and Azerbaijan’s role in the project as a regional transit hub, APA reports.
The report notes the growing importance of the Middle Corridor and that Azerbaijan stands at the center of Asia-Europe trade connectivity.
It is stated that the Middle Corridor is evolving from a regional route into a major intercontinental trade route connecting Asia and Europe, while Azerbaijan’s location at the heart of the route further enhances the country’s transport and logistics importance.
Speaking to Euronews, Emil Mammadov, Adviser to the Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, noted that the Middle Corridor is no longer merely a transit route but is increasingly becoming a trade corridor. According to him, as international demand grows, the volume of transportation along the route is also increasing. The introduction of digital solutions makes it possible to track cargo, manage logistics processes and improve coordination among participating countries.
“We have the advantage of the Caspian Sea, and this helps us increase transport efficiency through the Middle Corridor. Therefore, Azerbaijan’s geographical location is very important. Each country has its own ecosystem and infrastructure. The Middle Corridor has many different participants. Increasing coordination among these participants is very important. Nowadays, we need to know immediately where the cargo is located, what stage it is at, whether there are any delays, and the status of the services to be provided. Digital solutions are used for this purpose,” Emil Mammadov emphasized.
He said that the Middle Corridor is expanding and acquiring an intercontinental character.
The report notes that the Baku International Sea Trade Port handled approximately 8 million tons of cargo in the first 11 months of 2025 and that this figure is expected to increase to 25 million tons in the coming years.
It was emphasized that the Baku International Sea Trade Port connects ports in Asia and Europe and that the 40% increase in cargo handling at the port in 2025 indicates expanding trade and transit flows along the route.
“According to experts, growing cargo volumes, the expansion of digital logistics capabilities and the development of port infrastructure could enable the Middle Corridor to become a more competitive alternative route between Asia and Europe in the future. Thus, Azerbaijan is strengthening its position not only as a transit country along the Middle Corridor but also as a major logistics hub in Asia-Europe trade relations,” the report says.
