Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) has carried out major work on the construction of the Astara Terminal (in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran), one of the main elements of the North-South International Transport Corridor, in the direction of developing this corridor, ADY told APA-Economics.

85% of the terminal's design work and 72.4% of the construction and installation work have been completed. An 8.3 km railway line has been laid from the Astara station to the Iran–Azerbaijan border, and a railway bridge has been constructed over the Astara River. The project includes the construction of 7 bridges. The construction of one of the bridges was fully completed, and 90% of the work on the remaining bridges has been finished.

In 2023, more than 692,000 tons of cargo were handled at the Astara Terminal, and it is expected that over 777,000 tons will be handled in 2024. Once the terminal's construction is fully completed, the annual cargo handling capacity is expected to reach 3.5 million tons.

The Astara Terminal will ensure an increase in cargo traffic along the North-South International Transport Corridor and provide efficient operations.

Note that the construction of the Astara Terminal started in 2017 based on an agreement between the governments of Azerbaijan and Iran.

The terminal is located in the Iranian city of Astara, 1.4 km from the Azerbaijan–Iran border. The land of terminal whose construction is being carried out by ADY, has been leased to Azerbaijan by the Iranian government for a period of 25 years.
