In the framework of infrastructure construction carried out by Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) in 2023–2024, the Dubandi–Zira–Gurgan–Zira Sea Port railway line (21 km) has been reconstructed, and a new 9 km long railway line has been laid between Gurgan and Zira Port, ADY told APA-Economics.

According to the information, the mentioned infrastructure construction has enabled the transportation of transit freight by rail from Zira Port for the first time.

In the initial phase, the transportation of nearly 13,000 tons of freight has begun. Sulfur cargo sent from Central Asia will be seen off  by train towards Europe.

In total, it is planned to transport 60,000 tons of freight per month by rail from Zira Port.

In the next phase, it is expected to increase the variety of cargo, including the transportation of urea.

Thanks to the transportation of transit freight by rail from Zira Port, faster organization of freight flows along the Middle Corridor and the efficiency of operations will be ensured.

Besides organizing effective transit transportation, ADY is actively working on the development of the corridors passing through Azerbaijan, increasing their competitiveness and attractiveness. The Middle Corridor, which is the main strategically significant transit corridor for Azerbaijan, is used for transporting cargo from East to West and in the opposite direction. Azerbaijan is the main initiator of the diversification of this corridor and the formation of alternative branches.
