There has been a notable increase in cargo transport through the Middle Corridor, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has reported in this regard, APA-Economics reports.

The volume of transit cargo has increased by 86% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 2.7 million tons in 2023. The forecasted volume for 2024 is 4 million tons. This represents a record high for the corridor and demonstrates its growth potential to meet the increasing demands of global trade.

One example of the growing use of the corridor was the launch of a new route by Finland's Nurminen Logistics transportation company in May 2022, connecting China to Europe. This route further confirmed the high demand for the Middle Corridor.

"Currently, the Middle Corridor has a capacity of 5.8 million tons per year, which is significantly less than the Northern Corridor. However, if the right measures are taken, its capacity can be increased. Economic analyses show that by 2030, travel times between China and the western border of Europe will be halved, and cargo volumes will triple, reaching 11 million tons," the ADB statement noted.
