We have discussed the development stages of the Middle Corridor from various perspectives. Infrastructure development has been a priority on the agenda of Azerbaijan Railways in recent years, Emil Mammadov, Adviser to the Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, said during a panel discussion held as part of the “German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026,” APA-Economics reports.
According to him, during this period, projects involving the electrification of the railway system, reconstruction of new stations and other infrastructure projects have been implemented: “At the same time, in order to prepare for larger cargo volumes, border operations, alongside infrastructure development, are among the important areas Azerbaijan Railways is working on seriously. Work is underway to improve procedures and introduce a unified documentation system that will make it possible to pass through countries along the Middle Corridor in a shorter period of time.
Another important factor that will enable us to handle larger cargo volumes is the transfer of Alat Port to the management of the railway administration. This integration makes it possible to increase operational efficiency at the main entry point of the Caucasus region.
As we saw from last year’s statistics, container transportation volumes at Baku Port are increasing. I believe good results will also be achieved this year. We are seeing growth in both bulk cargo and container cargo volumes."
He noted that this growth is linked not only to infrastructure development, but also to increased operational efficiency: “Therefore, the issues we are working on include not only infrastructure, but also coordination and cooperation with various partners along the Middle Corridor. We work together with different stakeholders both within the country and along the Middle Corridor."
