The United Nations will implement a project related to the Caspian Sea, Dmytro Shlapachenko, the UN resident coordinator in Azerbaijan, told APA in an interview.
According to him, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) are planning to implement the "Blueing the Caspian Sea" project.
"The main goal, of course, is to make the Caspian cleaner. Recruitment of international and national staff will begin soon, and the project will start being implemented," Shlapachenko said.
He stated that the project aims to strengthen pollution monitoring, protect biodiversity, and develop regional environmental cooperation.
According to the UN official, the project will help Azerbaijan and neighboring countries build a stronger scientific and institutional foundation for protecting the Caspian Sea.
Shlapachenko also noted that the volume of water flowing into the Caspian Sea has decreased by 10–15% in recent years. He believes this affects both biodiversity and economic activity.
"We believe this is the beginning. There will be more projects, but time will tell," the UN official added.
