One of the strongest earthquakes in the last decade was recorded on the Kamchatka Peninsula of the Russian Federation. The natural disaster caused a tsunami threat not only in the region, but also in Japan, Alaska and Hawaii, APA reports.

APA presents the latest information on the earthquake:

The tremors began at 11:30 local time. According to witnesses, furniture moved, household appliances overturned, and car alarms went off at that moment.

The walls of kindergarten No. 15 in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky collapsed during repairs. There were no children in the building and the workers were evacuated in time.

The city's children's clinic was temporarily closed.

According to the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the magnitude of the main earthquake was 8.7.

Later, aftershocks with a magnitude of up to 5.8 were recorded off the coast of Kamchatka.

A 4-meter tsunami wave was observed in the Yelizovo district.

The first tsunami waves also reached the shores of the Northern Kuril Islands. According to eyewitnesses, the waves washed away a fish processing plant, and sirens were heard in the area.

From 03:30 to 04:40, eight earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 5 occurred off the coast of Kamchatka.

At 03:46, the departure of six flights at Yelizovo Airport was delayed. Ceiling panels, lighting plafonds and coverings in the terminal collapsed, and display cases moved. One woman was injured, her condition is assessed as satisfactory.

The Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said that strong aftershocks (repeated tremors) of magnitude 7.5 could last for at least a month.

About 300 people were evacuated from the port of North Kuril.
