The West continues to militarize the South Caucasus, Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, said at a briefing held today while commenting on Canada joining the European Union mission in Armenia, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.

According to her, the presence of the European Union mission in Armenia is inefficient.

"Every day, we are more and more convinced that this mission cannot prevent incidents in the area, and that the EU does not have any positive contribution to the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan. On the contrary, representatives of the EU deal with different types of provocations, intelligence activities, and propaganda. As far as we understand, Canada's accession to the EU mission in Armenia has turned into a practical level. Recently, "experts" from Canada paid a visit to Armenia. What is the additional value of this decision, is not obvious. Let the Armenians comment on it themselves. Washington is likely using its European allies to push NATO forces into the South Caucasus. Clearly, across the Atlantic, they not only want to expand their ability to control the situation on the ground but also want to watch their European allies. The efforts of foreign players in the South Caucasus in the form of NATO make the loss of trust in the region, escalation, and armed conflict inevitable. Real assistance to the regulation of Azerbaijan-Armenia is not included in the goals of the EU and NATO. The West continues to militarize the South Caucasus, turning it into the next arena of geopolitical conflict, rejecting the interests of local residents. The West is crossing the line on the implementation of the tasks of peaceful development of the region soon," said M. Zakharova.
