The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of the UN has expressed concern about the effects of the mining industry on drinking water resources in Armenia, said in the committee's final observations on the fourth periodical report on Armenia, APA reports.
The document expresses special concern over the pollution of Istisu Lake (Daraleyaz District) and Goycha Lake by the mining industry of Armenia. It was noted that mining industry activities have adversely affected the safe access to drinking water of the affected communities, resulting in violations of their right to water, food and health, as well as damage to nature.
The Committee called on Armenia to intensify its efforts to ensure adequate protection of water resources and to take all necessary measures to ensure that the mining industry does not endanger the population's access to safe drinking water.
